FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Please see below for a selection of frequently asked questions.
TERMS DATES & REHEARSAL TIMES
WHEN DO REHEARSALS RUN?
Each of the 3 terms contain 12 rehearsals. The dates of all rehearsals throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn terms are listed on our Calendar page along with school holidays. We don’t follow the conventional school year that starts in September, our year starts in January and ends with a Christmas performance (participation is optional) towards the end of December.
WHAT TIME ARE REHEARSALS?
Our rehearsals start at 7.30pm and run until 9.00pm. This will always be the case unless there are special circumstances such as extra workshops.
BECOMING A MEMBER
HOW DO I JOIN THE CONTEMPORARY CHOIR?
Once you’ve attended your free trial (book your free trial here) you’ll receive an email asking whether you would like to join and details of how to do so. Membership is paid for by setting up an account with our secure online payment system ‘Go Cardless’. A link will be provided via email from us which will take you through to the correct plan for you. You then follow the online instructions to set up membership.
IS IT OK TO CHANGE MY FREE TRIAL DATE?
Of course, as long as we know in advance it’s no problem to switch to a different session. Unfortunately if you miss your booked free session without letting us know, we are unable to offer an alternative free trial.
I'M A LITTLE NERVOUS, DO I HAVE TO SING BY MYSELF?
Absolutely not, there is no audition and you won’t be singled out when you attend your free trial. You’ll be singing within your section and will surely gain the confidence to sing out and have a wonderful time doing so! There may be a song or two where a solo may be appropriate, but that would only ever be the case if the soloist was willing and comfortable enough to sing alone.
WHY IS THERE A 16+ AGE LIMIT?
Working with older teens and adults allows for a more positive and fruitful environment in the rehearsal room. That being said, we do sometimes give consent for slightly younger but mature teens to attend with a parent or guardian, always feel free to ask.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN?
The Contemporary Choir costs £100 per 12 session term – so each session costs £8.33. The usual annual cost is £300 in total. Due to the late start in 2018 our first term is shorter, so this year’s total cost is lower and will be worked out individually for you dependant upon when in the year you become a member.
HOW DO I PAY?
Monthly payments are made online via a secure system (Go Cardless). Your monthly membership fee will be worked out for you dependant upon when in the year you start your membership, and a personalised link will be emailed to you. This link will take you through to ‘Go Cardless’ where you will set up your account, thus activating your membership.
WHAT DOES MY MEMBERSHIP PAY FOR?
We strive for every aspect of the Contemporary Choir to be professional and of a high standard; therefore we work hard behind the scenes and continually invest time and funds into rehearsal spaces, song arrangements, website maintenance, paying live musicians to record, music licensing, printing etc.
WHY DO I STILL PAY OUT OF TERM TIME?
Depending on how you choose to spread the cost of your membership, an even amount will be taken throughout the year. This includes the time when the Contemporary Choir is out of term. You pay the same amount whether paying for the full term in advance, or decide to spread the payment throughout the year on a monthly basis.
DO I GET A REFUND IF I MISS SESSIONS?
If you make us aware of any dates that you won’t be able to attend BEFORE commencing membership, your payments will be calculated minus those sessions. However, we ask that our members are committed to attending each term (to ensure all of our members are at the same level and learning at the same pace), and therefore the Contemporary Choir don’t offer a refund on missed sessions that we haven’t already taken into account..
SONG LYRICS & SHEET MUSIC
DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING WITH ME?
You will be provided with the lyrics and / or sheet music you will need for our rehearsals. When you become a member, you will be given a folder for all of your music – it is then your responsibility to bring your folder along with you to every rehearsal. (Please note, the ability to read sheet music is not required, you will find that looking at sheet music however will help you to follow your notes and rhythms.)
PERFORMING WITH THE CONTEMPORARY CHOIR
IS PERFORMING COMPULSORY?
Absolutely not! We very much understand that performing in front of an audience is not for everybody, and you will be under no pressure from anyone to do anything other than rehearse with us as normal. There is something to be said about safety in numbers though, and you will be surprised how confident you may feel singing our fabulous repertoire next to your choir family. There will be incredible opportunities to record vocals in a studio and perform with live musicians throughout the year.
CANCELLING MY MEMBERSHIP
HOW DO I CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP?
If you decide to leave us, just get in touch and once you’re all up to date payment wise we shall help you to cancel your membership.
THE CONTEMPORARY CHOIR UNIFORM
DO WE HAVE TO WEAR ANYTHING SPECIFIC?
Members are required to wear their Contemporary Choir Logo T-Shirt at all performances and arranged photo sessions. If you become a member within a week of attending your free trial, you will received your T-Shirt for free. The usual cost is £10 per garment.
